Yann Tourbe on the Champagne economy

A recording from Caroline Henry's live video

On Thursday, Yann Tourbe, the Champagne specialist at our local paper l’Union, shared his ideas on where the champagne sales are heading. In the short term they probably will fall a bit more before they level out. In the mid to longer term (2030), they could reach 300 million again according to Yann, who believes in the power of the Mercosur markets (especially Brazil), the opening up of the Indian market, and growth in Africa. I, on the other hand, reminded him of the changing alcohol and wine consumption habits in established markets, which are likely to push sales further down in the future.

We also spoke about the two different visions for Champagne’s future - a quality focused one where the total sales would be reduced to 250 million or even 200 million bottles, and the current vision which remains solidly focused on 300 million bottles.

Finally the discussion touched upon champagne’s price point and where it may head in the future.

Yann has a distinctive local view while mine has remained very much global. This always makes for interesting and enriching discussions between us. If you enjoy this video feel free to share it.

PS I am really sorry for the delay in posting this video - I have been (literally) floored by a bad migraine the last two days.
